An international scientific conference dedicated to the history, cultural significance, and modern development of national dog-breeding traditions was held in the capital of Turkmenistan as part of celebrations marking the Day of the Turkmen Alabay. The 6th International Scientific Conference “Breeding of the Turkmen Alabay and Tazy: History, Culture and Art”, held on October 23 at the Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A. Niyazov, brought together scientists, specialists, and young researchers in this field. This was reported on the official website of the higher education institution.
The participants first visited an exhibition organized at the university’s cultural center. The exhibition featured books, works of art, national values, and materials dedicated to the Alabay and Tazy dogs, which are considered a source of national pride for the Turkmen people, as well as information about their history.
Representatives of the Scientific Research Institute of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine of the Ministry of Agriculture of Turkmenistan, the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, the International Association “Türkmen alabaý itleri”, public organizations, cultural institutions, university professors, cynologists, experienced dog breeders, and students took part in the conference.
During the event, presentations were delivered on the distinctive features of the Turkmen Alabay, breeding and training practices, the history of the Turkmen Tazy, traditional naming of Alabays, and the depiction of these dogs in visual arts, carpet weaving, and archaeological discoveries.
Participants emphasized that the Turkmen Alabay is not only a reliable guardian and loyal companion but also an important part of the cultural heritage developed by the people over centuries. The speakers highlighted the special attention given to this national value in the Hero-Arkadag’s book “Türkmen alabaýy” (Turkmen Alabay) and in the poem “Türkmeniň buýsanjy” (Pride of the Turkmen) by the Esteemed President.
The conference also focused on the scientific study of Turkmen dog-breeding traditions, research into the historical and genetic characteristics of Alabays, and the collection of new scientific information in this field. The event concluded with an emphasis on the importance of further efforts to enhance the international reputation of Turkmen Alabays.
